Kommentar/Beschreibung

Some of Shakespeare’s plays are concerned with English kings and historical events (conspiracies, battles, marriages) which took place during their reigns. In this course we are going to read four of them: Richard III; Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; Henry V. Topics to be discussed will include dramatic structure, characterization and Shakespeare’s concepts of kingship and of history.
Texts: editions of the plays in The Arden Shakespeare series (to be made available at zur Heide). Please do not acquire any other edition. Please register for the course in one of my office hours before the beginning of the semester. And please make sure you have read the plays before term starts (There will be a short test on plots and characters).
