Kommentar/Beschreibung

This is a V1 LITERARY STUDIES course, also open as the literary studies part of the I-Module.

In its combination of what Powell and Smith call “high art and popular culture” (1) the Gothic tradition with its supernatural elements and its interest in the interconnection of pleasure and terror has long fascinated readers and scholars alike. In this course, we will approach the Gothic tradition in British literature from two perspectives: first, we will engage with key concepts that shape Gothic writing, and in a second step we will trace these concepts in a number of milestone publications in the Gothic literary tradition. Among others, we will discuss Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde” and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Please be aware that this is a reading-intensive course!

Students will be required to
- read and discuss a number of primary as well as secondary texts on the Gothic
- participate actively and regularly in (online) course activities in the form of weekly tasks on the Stud.IP platform that students can complete at any time during the week
- prepare a “background” handout on one Gothic “milestone” text [Studiennachweis]
- write a term paper (details on requirements will be announced in the first session) [Prüfungsleistung]

Reading materials for each session are either accessible in the university library and its databases, or will be made available on Stud.IP. Further material will also be made available online. Check Stud-IP for updates, announcements, and changes!

Please note:
In this course, term papers will be due on February 28, 2021. In all likelihood, I will not be able to offer deadline extensions.
In order to make up for the short writing time for the term paper, I plan to block some sessions in the first half of the term so that for some weeks in November/December 2020 this course will run with 4 SWS, while there will be no sessions towards the end of the term so that you can get a headstart on your term papers.
