Kommentar/Beschreibung

The spread of English around the world has been and continues to be both rapid and unpredictable. This lecture will deal with the complex historical involvement of colonization and globalization in the process of forming newer varieties of English. We will look at varieties all around the world such as varieties in Africa, the Carribean or South Asia. To better understand the similarities and differences between these varieties, we will also develop the skill set to discuss these languages from a linguistic point of view. This includes characteristics such as vocabulary, usage, phonology and grammar. We will then debate topics such as language in education, the rise of English without colonial pressures and its role as a lingua franca.

The current status for all university courses is that we will not meet until May. I am currently working on a concept to ensure that you will still learn something in the meantime. The effort expected from you will be in line with the ECTS criteria, but rather than a 90-minute lecture, it will be a mixture of informational content and your responses to this content. You will learn more as soon as possible.
