The hostility towards socialist ideology in the United States roots in the deep fear of losing freedom and individuality – the central aspects on which the country was founded upon. Throughout the 20th century until today, the Red Scare permeated politics and cultural life across the country and never lost its impact on society.
After the October Revolution, the ensuing emergence of a socialist and communist movement in the United States quickly measured political dimensions. The growing fear caused a wave of denunciation and eventually deportation. The end of World War II lead to a second Red Scare which was characterised by a suspected socialist infiltration and conspiracy theories revolving around the US government.
Consequently, the persecution of socialist machinations had great effect on cultural life – especially cinema. Besides spy films adapting the Red Scare into fiction, also other film genres like Sci-Fi exhibit considerable influence by anti-Socialist sentiments.
This seminar will take on the Red Scare and its multi-layered impact on US society. The major focus will be placed on films of different genres since the 1950s.
