Shortly after the post-Civil War reconstruction, the former Confederate States of America entered a period of commemorating Confederate deeds by erecting memorials and founding Confederate heritage associations. Reaching far into the 20th century, this commemoration also influenced different parts of US pop-culture.
Ranging from Confederate history and nostalgia to racist ideologies, the commemoration of the Confederacy seeks to define a Southern identity and to defend the troubled heritage of the South – cumulating in controversies surrounding the “Lost Cause of Confederacy”.
This seminar will explore the role of pop-culture to support apologetic and negationist narratives such as the vindication of slavery. Trivialising racism while glorifying the deeds of the south, film, music, or fashion heavily contributed to a nostalgia for the Confederacy – fuelling the “Lost Cause” debate until today.
Please note that this seminar cannot be taken as part of the ANG-I module.
