Kommentar/Beschreibung

When Britain ruled India (1756-1947), the British residents were confronted with India’s tropical climate as well as native cultures and ways of life considered strange and unfamiliar. Many short texts written in prose (both fictional and non-fictional) record the attempts of the British to cope with this situation, attempts which could be humorous, or tragic, or both.
In this seminar, we are going to read a selection of these texts and examine them as to form, motifs, and attitudes with regard to the British presence in India. We are going to read:
Rudyard Kipling. Plain Tales from the Hills, ed. Andrew Rutherford. Oxford World's Classics (Copies will be made available at zur Heide)
Robert Addison. Traits and Stories of Anglo-Indian Life
George Aberigh-Mackay. Twenty-One Days in India
and selected texts by Flora Annie Steel, Robert Watson Frazer, and John Cave-Brown. Please copy the texts from the master-copies left at Copy Shop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29 (with the exception of Plain Tales from the Hills), from 15 July 2021, and make sure you have read them by the beginning of the semester (there will be short test on titles and contents).
If you wish to take part in the course, please give me a phone call (0541/969-4985, Mondays to Fridays, 10.30 to 12.30 hours, or 8.30 to 12.30 from 19. 7. 2021), in addition to registering on StudIP. If I can accept you, you will be given a guaranteed place in the course, and in turn make a commitment to attend it.
