Kommentar/Beschreibung

With William Blake´s poem Jerusalem in mind, the British Labour Party long sought to create a new promised land in the UK, although less in the religious sense and more in terms of a state free from social inequality, privilege and injustice. The New Jerusalem was to be founded on socialist principles blended with all that was best from the nation`s historical inheritance – a distinctly British paradise. The project began in earnest in the 1940s with considerable success. Led by the socialist prime minister, Clement Attlee, a revolution took place in society during the post-war years indicating that perhaps a new and „modern“ Britain was indeed being created. And yet not everything went to plan. Now that several decades have passed since Britain`s post-war dreams and nightmares have both become realities to some degree, this course seeks to trace the story of Britain´s development since 1940, and to establish the degree to which The New Jerusalem has taken shape.
